Martin Jetter’s appointment advances SCION’s commitment to furthering its evolution and fostering adoption while expanding its mission to promote security, reliability and sovereignty in critical infrastructure sectors.
Switzerland, Lucerne, 1.09.2025 – The SCION Association today announced the appointment of Martin Jetter as its new Chairman. The former Senior Vice President of IBM Corp. and former Chairman of Deutsche Börse AG, brings a wealth of leadership experience to this role. His appointment underscores SCION’s growing momentum, particularly in sectors where trust is essential because cybersecurity concerns are heightened, and digital sovereignty and cyber resilience are critical.
SCION (Scalability, Control, and Isolation On Next-Generation Networks) is a cutting-edge internet architecture developed at ETH Zurich that addresses today’s most pressing issues related to connectivity including cybersecurity, data sovereignty and optionality, and cyber resilience for the critical sectors.
In the age of highly advanced and ever-expanding cloud, data, and AI applications, a highly secure and reliable network is more necessary than ever. The SCION Association is the governing body of SCION, committed to further fostering its evolution and adoption.

“It’s an honor to be appointed as the new Chairman of the SCION Association, having served on the advisory board since 2022,” said Martin Jetter. “With the increasing complexity and risks faced by critical sectors – from finance to healthcare, energy and governments, the challenges to infrastructure, ranging from rising cybersecurity threats to growing demands for digital sovereignty, require a completely new approach to connectivity. I strongly believe SCION stands out as the only solution most capable of providing the necessary trust, control, and cyber resilience.”

As critical sectors increasingly rely on the Internet for data exchange, SCION presents a transformative solution that combines the cybersecurity advantages of private lines with the flexibility of Internet-like connectivity. Unlike traditional systems tied to a single provider, SCION enables multiple telecoms to deliver seamless, uninterrupted service, reducing third-party risks and enhancing cyber resilience. This architecture ensures data sovereignty and optionality by allowing organizations to choose the jurisdictions and networks through which their data travels.
A prime example of SCION’s effectiveness is the Secure Swiss Finance Network (SSFN), launched by the Swiss National Bank and SIX. Replacing the old private line-based system, SCION powers the SSFN, which securely facilitates data exchange across over 300 financial institutions worldwide, processing transactions totaling approximately 200 billion Swiss francs daily. Its proven reliability and security highlight SCION’s critical role in safeguarding sovereign financial infrastructure amid growing cyber threats.

“SCION has always embodied core Swiss values – innovation, security, and quality and I’m proud to have been involved in its journey from the early days when the SCION Association was founded,” said Uli Sigg, Swiss entrepreneur and Vice Chairman of the Board and initial founding member of the SCION Association. “I’m excited to have supported SCION’s growth from a research initiative into a market-ready solution. SCION reflects what Switzerland stands for, and I am deeply aligned with its core mission, international expansion and global impact.”

Martin Jetter has been actively engaged with the SCION Association as an Advisory Board member since 2022, providing strategic guidance to the SCION Association with a focus on improving the SCION specifications, open source, and community outreach. As the new Chairman, Martin Jetter will provide SCION and its community with a wealth of strategic and operational insights and experience. He has already proven his deep understanding of the fundamental role connectivity plays in today’s critical infrastructure operations and systems.
Martin Jetter assumed the position on July 1, 2025, and succeeded Prof. Dr. Lothar Thiele who has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors since 2023. The SCION Association wishes to thank Prof. Dr. Thiele for his outstanding engagement and his many contributions.

“The appointment of Martin Jetter as Chairman ensures that SCION will continue to expand globally and benefit more and more users and service providers,” added Prof. Dr. Lothar Thiele. “Now that SCION is moving from its academic roots toward broader deployment and adoption, it is the right moment for a leadership transition to Martin Jetter who has deep experience in business and technology.”
