Digital Realty Joins SCION Association to Enhance Secure Connectivity for Critical Infrastructure

ZURICH, Switzerland – May 13, 2025 – Digital Realty (NYSE: DLR), the largest global provider of cloud- and carrier-neutral data center, colocation and interconnection solutions, today announced that it has joined the SCION Association, the official governing body responsible for overseeing the development, technical specifications, and promotion of the SCION (Scalability, Control, and Isolation on Next-Generation Networks) protocol, becoming the first data center operator in Switzerland to do so. This milestone further strengthens Digital Realty’s commitment to building a secure, resilient and interconnected global digital ecosystem.

As a member of the SCION Association, Digital Realty is uniquely positioned to accelerate the adoption of the SCION protocol – a next-generation internet architecture designed to deliver enhanced levels of security, reliability, and control. The SCION protocol can be transparently transported over ServiceFabric® – Digital Realty’s global interconnection platform – enabling seamless, policy-aware networking across distributed environments and geographies.

SCION has already been adopted as the foundation for the Secure Swiss Finance Network (SSFN) – a trusted communications platform developed by the Swiss National Bank and SIX. The SSFN facilitates secure data exchange across more than 300 financial institutions globally, processing transactions totaling approximately 200 billion Swiss francs daily. Digital Realty’s Swiss data centers provide access to this secure financial backbone through SCION-enabled internet service providers (ISP), further underlining the company’s role as a trusted infrastructure partner for mission-critical operations.

“SCION enhances the security and resilience of digital infrastructure – particularly within the financial sector,” said Volker Ludwig, Managing Director, DACH at Digital Realty. “In the face of escalating cyber threats and growing regulatory scrutiny, secure and sovereign network connections are more important than ever. Joining the SCION Association reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting future-proof technologies and advancing secure digital transformation across the DACH region.”

SCION’s innovative approach allows enterprises to define and control the specific paths their data takes, a capability that is especially critical for industries with heightened security requirements such as finance, healthcare and energy. This path-aware design contrasts with traditional internet routing, offering businesses greater transparency, control, and data sovereignty.

“SCION sets new standards for mission-critical infrastructure that places the highest demands on data security, resilience and data sovereignty – as the example of the SSFN impressively demonstrates. Digital Realty has been involved in initiatives to establish the SCION technology internationally since 2023, and we look forward to driving the further development of SCION together. It makes us proud to welcome Digital Realty, a global leader, to our community,” said Nicola Rustignoli, Co-CEO of the SCION Association.

Digital Realty’s engagement with the SCION Association marks a strategic step toward deepening collaboration within the global SCION ecosystem and reinforces its leadership in secure, high-performance connectivity solutions.
